THE IMPORTANCE OF JOINING POLITICAL PROTESTS BY POLITICAL LEADERS

Political Protests are Right, but Political Leaders should Spearhead, Lead, Actively Participate and Provide Guidance - Haruna Abubakar Bebeji
Last week Hundreds of women in Kano have marched to the State Police Command to protest the recent Court of Appeal judgment that nullified the election of the Executive Governor of Kano State, His Excellency, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The women carried placards condemning the judgment and urged the federal government to stop interfering in the Kano court case between the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Some of them sang songs in support of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and protested the alleged injustice done to the people of Kano state by the appellate court.
There is no gainsaying the fact that, political protests are a crucial tool for citizens to express their dissatisfaction with the actions of the government or to advocate for change. They serve as a means to hold leaders accountable and ensure that the voices of the people are heard. However, for such protests to be effective and safeguard the interests of the masses, it is crucial for political leaders and their families to actively participate and provide guidance. The significance of leadership in political protests and the benefits it can bring to the masses cannot be overemphasized.

Political leaders hold considerable power and influence, and their active involvement in protests can significantly impact their success. When leaders join the masses in a demonstration, it not only provides much-needed leadership but also sends a strong message to the government. Leaders who show solidarity with their constituents demonstrate a genuine concern for their grievances, thereby strengthening the bond between the people and their elected representatives.

By participating in political protests, leaders and their families can enhance the security and confidence of the masses involved. Their presence acts as a deterrent to potential security threats, ensuring the safety of the protesters. Furthermore, the involvement of leaders can also give confidence to the masses, assuring them that their concerns are being acknowledged and validating their cause. This reassurance fosters unity and empowers individuals to stand up for their rights without fear or hesitation.
There have been instances where prominent political leaders have participated in protests, contributing to their success. Examples include the protest against the fuel subsidy removal in Nigeria during Jonathan's administration, where heavyweights like Buhari and El-Rufai joined the masses. Their participations served as shields to other protesters and also prevented the security agencies to unleash or use force to disperse the protesters.
Their active presence prevented the security forces from dispersing or harming the protesters, demonstrating the effectiveness of such leadership in ensuring the safety and favorable outcome of protests.

One of the underlying concerns of political protests lies in the manipulation of the masses by power-hungry leaders who seek their own interests rather than genuine change. By actively engaging in protests, leaders not only demonstrate their commitment but also reduce the likelihood of the masses being exploited by opportunistic individuals. The presence of leaders, their immediate families, friends, and cronies acts as a deterrent to any ulterior motives, ensuring that the protest remains focused on the objectives of the masses.
In conclusion, political protests play a vital role in a democratic society, providing a platform for citizens to voice their concerns and demand change. However, for such protests to be truly effective and beneficial to the masses, it is essential for political leaders, along with their families, to take an active role in leading these demonstrations. Their participation not only provides guidance and security but discredits any attempt by power-mongering leaders to manipulate the protest for personal gain. By standing united, leaders and citizens can create a powerful force capable of effecting real change, ultimately benefiting everyone within society.
