KANO ELECTION TRIBUNAL VERDICT: IN DEFENCE OF KASHIM SHETTIMA

The Kano Election Petitions Tribunal Verdict: In Defense of Vice President Kashim Shettima - Haruna Abubakar Bebeji
The recent verdict delivered by the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, which declared Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the rightful winner of the Kano State governorship poll, has sparked controversy. Some supporters of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have accused Vice President Kashim Shettima of influencing the judgment in favor of the APC. However, it is essential to shed light on the facts and refute these baseless allegations.

First and foremost, it is crucial to acknowledge the resilience of our judicial system. The Election Petitions Tribunal exists to ensure fair and just outcomes in disputed election cases. In a state that witnessed a hotly contested election, the tribunal's verdict serves as a testament to the fairness and effectiveness of our electoral laws.

Contrary to the claims made by certain NNPP supporters, Vice President Kashim Shettima has no hand in the Kano Election Petitions Tribunal verdict. Throughout his public service career, Shettima has been known as a respecter of the law, and he has never misused his influence for personal gain. As a former Governor of Borno State, his achievements in governance have been impressive, further solidifying his commitment to upholding the principles of justice and fairness.
It is important to note that accusations against Vice President Shettima are purely speculative with no concrete evidence to support them. The judicial system operates independently, and judges make decisions based on the law and the evidence presented before them. Insinuating that Vice President Shettima influenced the judgment without any substantiation undermines the integrity of our judicial process.

The court's decision to deduct 165,663 votes from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's purported total votes is not a result of interference but a consequence of the inability of his legal team to adequately defend the accusations of overvoting against them. The invalidation of the affected ballot papers, due to a lack of proper stamping or signing, was done in accordance with the established electoral laws.
It is regrettable that even prior to the judgment, some government officials of the Kano State government among whom is the sacked Commissioner of the State Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning, Adamu Aliyu Kibiya, made unguarded comments threatening the judges and also issued death threats to them, which undermined the integrity and independence of the judiciary. He also promised to unleash mayhem on residents of the state, one worse than what residents of neighbouring Kaduna and Zamfara are going through.

On this note, I am calling on the security agencies, that the death threat issued by the former Commissioner must not be allowed to go unpunished.
In conclusion, Vice President Kashim Shettima has no hand whatsoever in the Kano Election Petitions Tribunal Verdict. Allegations made by NNPP supporters against him are baseless and lack any evidence. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's removal from office was a result of his legal team's inability to adequately defend the accusations against him.

Let us not allow unfounded rumors to discredit individuals who have upheld the principles of justice and fairness throughout their public service careers.
