A SURGE IN MILITARY COUPS IN AFRICA: A CALL FOR NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT TO BE MORE ACCOUNTABLE

The Imperative of Democracy: Upholding its Values to Safeguard Stability - Haruna Abubakar Bebeji
Introduction:
In recent times, Africa has witnessed a surge in military coups, with Gabon being the latest country grappling with political uncertainty. While these events cast a shadow over democratic processes, it is essential to emphasize the invaluable importance of democratic governance, highlighting its merits and urging governments to prioritize the welfare of their citizenry. Furthermore, it is crucial to commend the Nigerian military for their remarkable restraint and underscore the need for the government to address pertinent issues, bolstering national stability and deterring any potential threats to the country's democracy.

The Contrast of Democratic Governance:
Democratic governments may have their flaws and challenges, but history has consistently demonstrated that they are a superior alternative to military rule. Despite their imperfections, democracies allow for a diverse range of voices, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and equality. They promote social justice, protect human rights, and provide mechanisms for peaceful power transitions through regular elections. Democratic nations also encourage transparency, accountability, and the rule of law, ensuring the fair distribution of resources and opportunities among citizens.
Moreover, democratic governments enable effective governance by encouraging dialogue, participation, and debate on critical national issues. They prioritize social development, public welfare, and economic growth, creating an environment conducive to investment and innovation. This, in turn, leads to increased foreign direct investment, bolstering economic stability and prosperity.
Commendation for the Nigerian Military:
In the face of numerous African military coups, it is commendable to observe the restraint and resilience exhibited by the Nigerian military. Despite challenges and periods of political instability, Nigeria has moved towards consolidating its democratic governance, thanks in part to the military's unwavering commitment to upholding the values of the constitution. It is essential to acknowledge and appreciate their role in safeguarding Nigeria's democracy, as stability is vital for progress and development.

A Call for Government Accountability:
While praising the military's dedication, it is imperative for the Nigerian government to address the underlying issues fueling discontent and potential vulnerabilities. By tackling corruption, improving social services, and fostering an environment of political inclusion and economic opportunity, leaders can deter any inclination towards seizing power. The government must prioritize the needs of the masses, adequately addressing social grievances, and enhancing the wellbeing of its citizens.
Additionally, empowering democratic institutions and ensuring the independence of the judiciary will foster public trust and confidence in the government's ability to uphold the rule of law. By doing so, it establishes a robust system capable of resolving disputes and addressing grievances through legal means, rather than resorting to military intervention.

Conclusion:
While Africa has witnessed its fair share of military coups, it is crucial to recognize the inherent value and superiority of democratic governance. By focusing on transparency, accountability, and welfare, governments can ensure stability and progress for their nations. The Nigerian military's resilience and commitment to democracy deserve commendation, but the government must play its part in addressing underlying issues to prevent military intervention. Upholding the principles of democracy lays the foundation for continued growth, prosperity, and the preservation of peace and stability in Nigeria and across the African continent.
