OGD'S PENSION SUSPENSION REQUEST: SETTING A NEW STANDARD

Former Ogun State Governor Sets Example in Public Service Ethics - Haruna Abubakar Bebeji
Introduction:

In a welcome display of ethical leadership, former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD), has requested the suspension of his monthly pension and allowances. With his decision, he has taken a commendable step towards minimizing the burden on the state government and setting an example that his compatriots in public office should follow.
Setting a New Standard:

Daniel's decision to forgo the monthly pension of N676,376.95, which he qualifies for as a former governor, is a reflection of his strong conscience, moral principles, and commitment to ethical governance. In alignment with his unwavering belief that a serving Senator, who was previously a state governor, should not receive pension and allowances from the same state, Daniel has chosen to lead by example.
A Call for Emulation:

It is crucial to commend and highlight the actions of leaders like Gbenga Daniel, as they provide a blueprint for integrity and accountability in public service. This selfless act should be emulated by his fellow former governors, whether they are currently serving as Senators or not.

It is disheartening to note that despite the ongoing discussions about cutting the cost of governance, 13 former governors continue to receive pension allowances as serving Senators in the 10th National Assembly. This contradiction raises questions about the commitment of these leaders to prioritize the greater good above personal gain.

The List of Former Governors according to TRIBUNE Still Receiving Pensions as Serving Senators in the 10th National Assembly include:
1. Senate President, Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom) 2007 – 2015
2. Aliyu Wammako (Sokoto) 2007 – 2015
3. Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara) 2011 – 2019
4. Dave Umahi (Ebonyi) 2015 – 2023
5. Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto) 2015 – 2023
6. Adams Oshiomhole (Edo) 2008 – 2016
7. Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe) 2011 – 2019
8. Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger) 2015 – 2023
9. Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia) 1999 – 2007
10. Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa) 2012 – 2020
11. Ibrahim Gaidam (Yobe) 2009 – 2019
12. Adamu Aliero (Kebbi) 1999 – 2007
13. Danjuma Goje (Gombe) 2003 – 2011
Conclusion:

Gbenga Daniel's decision to suspend his monthly pension and allowances serves as a beacon of hope for ethical public service in Nigeria. His strong moral compass and commitment to leading by example are worthy of commendation. It is incumbent upon his peers to recognize the importance of prioritizing the needs of the nation over personal benefits.

The actions of Gbenga Daniel remind us that true leadership lies in sacrificial service, where individuals put the welfare of the people above their own. It is our hope that this admirable act will inspire others to follow suit and encourage a wave of change within the political class.

As Nigerians, we deserve leaders who prioritize integrity, transparency, and accountability, and Gbenga Daniel has shown us that it is possible. Let us appreciate his gesture and implore others to emulate his principled stance, ensuring that public service is guided by a conscious commitment to the common good.
