NIGERIA'S ELECTRICITY: ARE WE JINXED?

Urgent Action Needed: Declaring a State of Emergency in Nigeria's Power Sector - Haruna Abubakar Bebeji
Introduction:
Nigeria’s perpetual struggle with its power sector has now reached critical levels, as generation and transmission have degenerated by approximately 29% over the years. Concurrent administrations have allocated massive sums of money towards solving this issue, yet the country's power situation remains stagnant. This unfortunate reality poses the question, are we jinxed? However, a ray of hope has emerged with President Bola Tinubu's recent assent to the electricity bill, granting states, companies, and individuals the authority to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity. It is now imperative for President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the power sector, mobilizing resources and expertise to address this pressing national crisis.
Dismal Power Situation:
Despite various government initiatives and huge financial investments, Nigeria's power sector is still unable to meet the demands of its growing population and economy. The end result is an aggravated state of darkness that burdens industries, hampers economic growth, and frustrates citizens.

Historical Inefficiency:
An alarming cycle of inefficiency has plagued the power sector under successive administrations. From Abdulsalami to Buhari, billions of dollars have been allocated to improve the situation with little to show for it. This dire situation is a stark reminder that simply throwing money at the problem is not the solution. It is evident that a new approach is required to tackle the systemic issues at the heart of Nigeria's power crisis.
Hope Shines with the Electricity Bill:
The recent assent by President Bola Tinubu to the electricity bill is a welcome development for the country. This landmark legislation holds the potential to revolutionize the sector, providing a framework for expanding access to electricity across rural, unserved, underserved, peri-urban, and urban areas. By enabling individuals, companies, and states to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity, the bill fosters competition and innovation, which should ultimately yield positive results.
The Urgency for a State of Emergency:
While the electricity bill is a significant step forward, it must be accompanied by a declaration of a state of emergency in the power sector. This move is crucial to signal the gravity of the situation and expedite the necessary actions to address the crisis effectively.

Through this emergency declaration, President Tinubu would be able to mobilize resources, expertise, and cooperation from both local and international stakeholders. The power sector requires a sense of urgency, and a state of emergency would empower the administration to actively collaborate with all relevant parties to develop and implement comprehensive strategies. This includes addressing issues in generation, transmission, distribution, and tapping into renewable energy sources to secure a sustainable future.

Conclusion:
Nigeria urgently needs to break free from its historical inefficiency in the power sector. President Tinubu's endorsement of the electricity bill is a beacon of hope, but it should be matched with a declaration of a state of emergency. This emergency declaration, accompanied by robust action plans, will prove the administration's commitment to solving the power crisis once and for all. The time for decisive action is now, for the benefit of all Nigerians, and the future of our great nation. Let us rally behind President Tinubu's leadership and demand a brighter and electrified future for all citizens.
