IMBALANCE IN THE N500 BILLION DBN LOAN DISBURSEMENT: SEN. NDUME ADVOCATES FOR FAIRNESS, DESERVES OUR COMMENDATION

Senator Ndume Sheds Light on Injustice in Loan Distribution: A Call for Fairness - Haruna Abubakar Bebeji
Introduction

In a bid to address the alleged uneven distribution of N500 billion credit facilities to Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSMEs) across Nigeria, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume has once again highlighted the issue of imbalance in the loan disbursement by the Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN). His motion was unfortunately rejected by the Senate President, leading to the first rowdy session of the 10th Senate. This article aims to commend Senator Ndume for his persistence in exposing this injustice and to call on the federal government to ensure a more even distribution of resources across all regions of the country.

A Call for Justice

Senator Ndume's motion brought to the forefront the glaring disparities in the allocation of the N500 billion loan meant to support MSMEs nationwide. It was revealed that the northern region received a mere 11 percent of the total amount, with the northeast cornered with only 1 percent. Meanwhile, Lagos, an already thriving economic hub, received a staggering 47 percent.

Such inequitable distribution is a clear violation of the principle of fairness and equality, and it perpetuates a harmful cycle of disparity. By concentrating the majority of resources in one region, the federal government is unintentionally hampering the development of other regions, particularly Northern Nigeria.
The Impact on Northern Nigeria

Northern Nigeria, with its vast potential and untapped resources, is in dire need of interventions that allow for economic growth and development. By neglecting this region and favoring others, the federal government is inadvertently exacerbating the existing economic disparities and hindering progress.

The MSME sector has consistently proven to be a driving force in economic advancement, fostering job creation, and improving livelihoods. Ensuring equal access to credit facilities for these businesses is pivotal in promoting inclusive economic growth across the country. Neglecting the northern region's MSMEs through uneven distribution of credit facilities negates the government's responsibility to foster national growth and cohesion.
A Call for Government Intervention

The need for equitable resource distribution cannot be overemphasized. It is imperative that the federal government takes immediate steps to rectify this disparity and foster a more inclusive economy. By promoting a fair distribution of resources, the government can give all regions an opportunity for economic growth and development.

The DBN, as an institution entrusted with disbursing loans, should also be held accountable for ensuring transparency and equal opportunities for all regions. Establishing clear guidelines and mechanisms to monitor the distribution process will help prevent any future irregularities.

Conclusion

Senator Ndume's motion shed light on an injustice that has gone unnoticed for far too long. It is commendable that he is advocating for fairness and equal representation for all parts of Nigeria. The federal government must take immediate action to rectify the situation and ensure the even distribution of resources meant for the entire country.

By addressing this issue, the government can demonstrate its commitment to national unity, inclusivity, and equitable development. It is time to put an end to favoritism and regional imbalances, creating an environment where all Nigerians can thrive and contribute to the nation's progress.
