The Urgent Need for Caution: Demolitions Should Not Cost More Lives in Kano State
THE URGENT NEED FOR CAUTION: DEMOLITIONS SHOULD NOT COST MORE LIVES IN KANO STATE - Haruna Abubakar Bebeji
The recent demolitions carried out by the Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf to rectify the illegal allocation of properties to former Governor Ganduje allies and cronies, have sparked a series of unfortunate events. The demolitions have been causing a lot of chaos and destruction in the state. These demolitions, while an effort to uphold due process as he said, have inadvertently provided an opportunity for hoodlums to vandalize and loot materials from the demolished structures. Even though the move as he was saying, was meant to stop the illegal granting of properties without due process, the governor failed to properly think through the consequences of his actions.
Tragically, this has resulted in loss of life for some of these individuals. It is crucial to address this sad scenario and call upon Governor Abba Yusuf to halt further demolitions before innocent lives are lost.
Many of the demolished buildings have been looted by hoodlums, who have been using the opportunity to steal materials and equipment from the properties. This is a clear indication that the governor's decision has not only caused loss of property but also the loss of lives.
Just recently, some of those hoodlums got trapped on the demolished Daula Hotel Building resulting in some of them losing their lives. This is a sad scenario that shouldn't have happened if only the governor had been more careful in his actions.
Constructive Solutions Over Demolitions
Governor Abba Yusuf's intentions if it were pure and good to correct past irregularities may be commendable. However, it is essential to acknowledge the consequences of demolishing structures without appropriate considerations. The act of demolition alone does not inherently address the underlying issues. Instead, seizing and repurposing these properties would render them useful for public benefit, without risking further chaos and bloodshed.
As responsible citizens, it is important to call on the governor to put a stop to these demolitions. Demolitions should not be the answer to the problem at hand. Rather, the government should seize these properties instead of destroying them just to provide opportunities for hoodlums to steal and vandalize properties.
The Unfortunate Fallout
Yesterday's incident, where a group of youths attempting to steal materials and equipment from the demolished Daula Hotel Building became trapped and lost their lives, highlights the inherent dangers of unchecked demolitions. This tragedy could have been avoided if alternative actions were pursued. Governor Abba Yusuf must assume responsibility for the lives lost and take immediate steps to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
The Governor should be held responsible for the outcome of his actions. If he does not stop these demolitions, more lives will continue to be lost, and he will have the bloods of innocent people on his hands.
Preserving Life While Pursuing Justice
It is undeniable that illegal property allocations must be rectified, but it is equally crucial to safeguard human lives during the process. Instead of completely tearing down structures, the governor should explore other avenues of resolving this issue. He should consider implementing a process of investigation and prosecution to hold those responsible accountable, without endangering innocent lives.
It is high time for Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to reconsider his actions and put the interest of the people first. As a leader, he has a duty to ensure that his actions do not cause harm to innocent citizens. We therefore urge him to stop these demolitions immediately and find a better solution to the problem at hand.
State Assembly Intervention and Ceasing Demolitions
The Kano State House of Assembly should intervene and encourage the governor to reassess his strategy. By halting further demolitions, the authorities can prevent the unnecessary loss of life and provide an opportunity for reform. The seized properties can be handed over to Kano State Investment and Properties Company or to be utilized for public purposes, be it schools, hospitals, or community centers that will benefit the citizens of Kano State.
Furthermore, it is crucial to address the issue of hoodlums taking advantage of these demolitions. The government should deploy adequate security personnel to prevent any acts of vandalism or theft during the seizure process, ensuring the safety of both public and private properties.
Conclusion
Governor Abba Yusuf's efforts to rectify past misdeeds in property allocations are laudable by some. However, the unforeseen consequences of demolitions should not be overlooked. The loss of innocent lives due to the actions of vandals during these demolitions is a tragic scenario that must be addressed immediately. It is imperative that the governor reassesses his approach and focuses on alternative methods that safeguard lives while ensuring justice is served. Ceasing the demolitions and directing efforts towards the allocation of repurposed properties for public use would provide a more constructive solution to this complex issue. Only then can we prevent further bloodshed and foster a just society for the people of Kano State.
