THE UNJUST DARKNESS: KEDCO'S INEXCUSABLE POWER FAILURE; KANO, KATSINA, AND JIGAWA STATES DESERVE MORE - Haruna Abubakar Bebeji

It is disheartening to note that millions of people living in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa States have recently been subjected to unbearable living conditions and found themselves plunged into an unfortunate state of darkness due to the lack of electricity supply for the past four days. Despite the sweltering, blistering and unbearably hot weather conditions experienced in the areas, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has failed to meet its obligations, unable to restore power across the three states, leaving the people in utter darkness, distress and crippling businesses. This deplorable situation has severely impacted businesses, disrupted daily life, and caused widespread frustration among residents.

The Ongoing Nightmare:

For the past four days, these states have experienced an uninterrupted blackout, and the consequences have been dire. The inability to access electricity doesn't just entail a lack of light; it cripples entire communities, hampers business activities, and inflicts untold hardships on a population already burdened by the challenges of everyday life.

What is even more deplorable is that despite several complaints from the affected residents, KEDCO has displayed a callous disregard for their plight; has been slow to respond and has been insensitive to their woes. It is also disheartening to note that rather than promptly restoring power, they have compounded the frustration by continuing to bill individuals for electricity they have not consumed, exploiting the already suffering citizens further. This double injustice must not go unnoticed or unaddressed.

Condemnation and Demands for Restoration:

The people of Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States deserve better. It is simply unacceptable for KEDCO to operate with such incompetence and insensitivity towards the hardships faced by its customers. This power distribution company must be held accountable for its actions, or rather, its inactions.

We strongly condemn the failure of KEDCO to restore power and urge the company to address this calamitous situation immediately, by restoring electricity to the three states as soon as possible and stop exploiting its customers through arbitrary and exploitative billing methods. The lives of millions hang in a precarious balance as they grapple with the consequences of this extended blackout. From families struggling to keep food fresh to businesses struggling to stay afloat in these challenging times, KEDCO's negligence has inflicted significant damage.

Conclusively, it is high time that KEDCO recognizes the gravity of its actions. The people of Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States demand swift restoration of power, accompanied by appropriate compensation for the hardships endured.

Furthermore, KEDCO must undergo an internal assessment to identify the systemic failures that have marred its reputation and ensure that such situations do not recur in the future.

It is also high time KEDCO took responsibility and restored light to the affected areas. The right of access to electricity is a fundamental right of all Nigerian citizens; hence it is unethical for the company to leave the affected residents in darkness and follow improper billing procedures for the electricity consumed.

The citizens of these states, despite their resilience, should not be subjected to such gross negligence. It is the responsibility of KEDCO to rectify this dire situation urgently and to restore light and hope back into the lives of the people they serve. Let this be a turning point, where the needs and well-being of the people supersede corporate apathy, and electricity is no longer a luxury but an essential service that is delivered with efficiency and care.
