SOS KNSG: Water Scarcity Hitting Us Hard in Kano - Haruna Abubakar Bebeji
Water is an essential commodity that is crucial to the survival of human beings and all living organisms. However, the situation in Kano State, particularly in Kano City, is quite alarming. The state is facing the worst water scarcity in history, and this has left the people in a dire and vulnerable state.
The most affected local government areas are those of Metropolitan which are Tarauni, Nassarawa, but it's Dala, Fagge, Gwale, Kano Municipal, Kumbotso, and Ungogo.
The residents of the affected areas mostly depends on the state water board, boreholes established by government and philanthropists as well as water vendors to get water for their daily use.
It's commendable that the Governor of Kano State Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf has recently issued a an ultimatum to the management of Kano State Water Board to present their demands, as part of efforts to alleviate the ongoing water crisis in the region.
This directive was given by the governor during his inspection visit to the Challawa Water Treatment Plant in Kano.
The Kano State Water Board, which is responsible for pumping water to the citizens, has failed drastically in meeting the demands of the people. The board's inefficiency has left many households stranded, as the taps run dry. This has pushed many people to purchase water from vendors at exorbitant rates. Imagine paying more than ₦100 for a jerrycan of water in some localities.
A 25-litre jerrycan of water, which hitherto, sells at N30, now cost between N80 and N150, depending on the area. This is not just outrageous but also unacceptable.
The increasing demand for water has left many vendors smiling to the bank as they observe their business booming. But the same cannot be said for the people who are forced to patronize them. The high cost of water has left many people struggling to afford basic necessities. Water scarcity has led to several health problems, including dehydration, waterborne diseases, and poor sanitation. It is a tragedy that the state government needs to address urgently.
It is alarming that residents of Kano City and its environs have been grappling with water scarcity for years now. Despite various interventions in the past, the problem persists, and the situation is getting worse. It is time for the Kano State Government to take concrete steps towards addressing this persistent problem.
Residents have for long being decrying the acute water scarcity being experienced in the metropolitan areas. The problem affects residents of the eight metropolitan local government areas of the state more.
The government should invest more resources into water infrastructure development, maintenance, and management. There should be a significant focus on rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment, and recycling. The government must also ensure that the water is accessible, affordable, and safe for consumption by all citizens.
More importantly, the government should engage in public-private partnerships to develop sustainable water supply systems for the people. This way, the government can have the necessary funding, technical expertise and partnerships that are needed to improve water infrastructure in the state.
In conclusion, the water scarcity in Kano State is beyond a health crisis; it is also an economic crisis that has left several families struggling to make ends meet. The Kano State Government needs to prioritize water infrastructure development, maintenance, and management. The citizens of Kano State have a right to access clean water; hence, it is time for the government to bring an end to this persistent water crisis.
