SEME BORDER REOPENING: NORTHERN NIGERIAN BORDERS SHOULD ALSO BE REOPENED

President Tinubu’s Decision to Reopen Seme Land Border: Commendable Step Towards Economic Development - Haruna Abubakar Bebeji

In a move that has been widely applauded, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the reopening of the Seme land border for the importation of vehicles. This decision is one that deserves commendation which marks a significant milestone in Nigeria's journey towards economic development, and it is a testament to President Tinubu's commitment to transforming the nation's economy. Undoubtedly, the President's decision would boost the country's economic development and usher in a new era of progress and development in Nigeria.

It is important to reflect on the context that led to the closure of the country's land borders in August 2019 under the former administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. The aim was to curb illegal activities, such as the importation of drugs, arms, and agricultural products from neighboring West African countries. However, it became evident that the border closure did more harm than good and significantly increased the hardship faced by Nigerians.

Therefore, President Tinubu's decision to reopen the Seme land border is a commendable and timely move. It is indicative of his understanding of the need to boost economic growth and alleviate the suffering of the Nigerian people. By allowing the importation of vehicles through this border, we can expect to witness an increase in economic activity, job creation, and the development of ancillary industries. This will undoubtedly contribute to Nigeria reaching new heights of economic prosperity.

However, it is crucial to address the issue of fairness and equity in the reopening of the land borders. While the reopening of the Seme land border is undoubtedly a positive step, it is imperative that President Tinubu also considers reopening all land borders in Northern Nigeria. This will ensure that all regions of the country benefit equally from the economic growth and development opportunities that come with border reopening.

Northern Nigeria shares borders with Niger Republic, Chad, Cameroon, and Benin Republic. By reopening these borders, the prices of foreign commodities, including rice, groundnut oil, and chicken, will be forced to come down. This will alleviate the high cost of living faced by Nigerians, particularly the common man who is currently bearing the brunt of the economic hardships.

It is essential to emphasize that the reopening of the land borders in Northern Nigeria should not be restricted to vehicles alone. Nigerians are hungry and impoverished, and they yearn for affordable food, including rice, groundnut oil, chicken, etc. By ensuring that these goods are accessible and affordable to all, the government will be promoting social justice and ensuring that no section of Nigeria is left behind in its quest for economic development.

President Tinubu has an opportunity to address this imbalance and demonstrate his commitment to fairness and equity by ordering the reopening of all land borders in Northern Nigeria. This will not only boost the economy of the region but will also be a significant step towards alleviating the hardships faced by its inhabitants.

By the time these borders are re-opened, prices of foreign commodities will reduce, thus causing local products to become more affordable. This move would improve the lives of the citizens, reduce the cost of living, create competition among businesses, and ultimately promote a thriving economy.

It is essential that President Tinubu's administration prioritizes the well-being of its citizens, and a key part of this would be to make essential commodities readily available and affordable. As such, the re-opening of these borders is a step in the right direction, and we can only hope that there will be more significant positive changes ahead.

In conclusion, President Tinubu's decision to reopen the Seme land border for the importation of vehicles is a commendable one. It marks a positive stride towards economic development in Nigeria. However, it is crucial that the reopening of land borders is extended to Northern Nigeria to ensure fairness, equity, and justice for all sections of the country. By making affordable food accessible to all Nigerians, we can truly claim to be on the path towards a prosperous and developed nation.
